Many elders in the AAPI community glean their living from what people throw away; collecting cans and plastic bottles in order to gain a meager income. Living on the margin, these invisible laborers are often out on the street at night, vulnerable to unprovoked racist attacks during the pandemic. Centering the composition with the Chinese character for “strong”, the piece honors these incredibly resilient immigrants, highlighting their hard work which is often unseen and underappreciated.
